Hepatitis C virus RNA (PCR)
Hepatitis · also called HCV viral load, HCV PCR
What it measures
Detects and measures HCV RNA. It confirms active infection after a reactive antibody test and checks cure (sustained virologic response) after treatment.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: EDTA plasma or serum
- Tube: Lavender top
- Preparation: Separate within 6 hours; freeze if delayed.
Reference range
| Group | Range |
|---|---|
| All | Not detected IU/mL |
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Active (viremic) HCV infection
- Acute infection before antibody appears
- Relapse after treatment
Method
Real-time RT-PCR (qualitative or quantitative); genotyping if needed
Good to know
Undetectable RNA 12 weeks after completing therapy (SVR12) is considered cure.
