Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs)
Hepatitis · also called HBsAb, Anti-HBsAg
What it measures
Measures antibody against HBsAg, which indicates immunity to hepatitis B. It is used to check response to vaccination and recovery after infection.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Serum or plasma
- Tube: Gold top
Reference range
| Group | Range |
|---|---|
| Protective (immune) | ≥ 10 mIU/mL |
| Not protective | < 10 mIU/mL |
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Successful hepatitis B vaccination (anti-HBs alone)
- Recovery from past infection (with anti-HBc total)
- Recent HBIG or blood product administration
Causes of low values
- Vaccine non-responder or waning immunity
- Susceptible, never exposed or vaccinated
- Current infection (HBsAg positive)
Method
CLIA/ECLIA or ELISA (quantitative, mIU/mL)
Good to know
Check 1–2 months after the last vaccine dose in health workers; a titre below 10 mIU/mL suggests revaccination.
