Hepatitis B core IgM antibody (anti-HBc IgM)

What it measures
Detects early IgM antibody to the HBV core protein. It is the key marker of recent (acute) hepatitis B, including the window period when HBsAg has disappeared.

Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Acute hepatitis B (usually within 6 months)
- Window period between HBsAg loss and anti-HBs appearance
- Flare of chronic hepatitis B (low-level positivity)

Good to know
A negative IgM anti-HBc with positive HBsAg favours chronic infection.
