What it measures
Detects IgG and IgM antibodies to HBV core antigen. It shows exposure to HBV at any time, past or present, and is not produced by vaccination.

Causes of high values
- Past resolved infection (with anti-HBs)
- Current acute or chronic infection (with HBsAg)
- Isolated anti-HBc: occult HBV, remote infection or false positive

Good to know
Positive patients starting chemotherapy, rituximab or immunosuppression need HBV reactivation monitoring or prophylaxis.
