What it measures
Detects IgM antibody to hepatitis A virus, confirming recent infection in a patient with acute hepatitis. HAV spreads by the faecal–oral route.

Causes of high values
- Acute hepatitis A (positive from symptom onset for about 3–6 months)
- Recent HAV vaccination (occasionally)
- Outbreaks linked to contaminated food or water

Good to know
Total anti-HAV (IgG) indicates immunity from past infection or vaccination.
