VLDL cholesterol

Lipid Profile · also called VLDL-C, Very-low-density lipoprotein

What it measures

VLDL particles carry triglycerides made in the liver to the tissues. VLDL cholesterol is usually estimated from triglycerides and adds information on triglyceride-rich, atherogenic remnant particles.

Specimen and preparation

Reference range

GroupRange
Adult5–30 (0.1–0.8) mg/dL (mmol/L)

Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.

Causes of high values

Method

Calculated: triglycerides ÷ 5 (mg/dL) or ÷ 2.2 (mmol/L)

Good to know

The estimate becomes unreliable when triglycerides exceed 400 mg/dL.
