HIV-1/2 antigen/antibody combination test

What it measures
Detects HIV-1 p24 antigen and antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in one assay. It is the recommended screening test and shortens the window period to about 2–6 weeks.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Serum or plasma
- Tube: Gold top
- Preparation: Pre-test counselling and informed consent as per local policy.

Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- HIV-1 or HIV-2 infection (requires confirmation)
- Acute HIV infection (p24 antigen positive)
- False positive (rare; confirm)

CLIA/ECLIA 4th-generation immunoassay; rapid tests for screening
Good to know
Reactive results are confirmed with a differentiation assay and/or HIV-1 RNA following the national testing algorithm.
