What it measures
Random glucose is measured at any time regardless of meals. It is useful in urgent settings to detect hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia and can diagnose diabetes when classic symptoms are present.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate plasma
- Tube: Gray top
- Preparation: Note time of last meal.

Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Diabetes mellitus
- Recent meal
- Stress and acute illness
- Steroid therapy
- IV dextrose
Causes of low values
- Hypoglycaemic drugs
- Prolonged fasting
- Insulinoma
- Sepsis and liver failure
Method
Enzymatic (hexokinase or glucose oxidase)
Good to know
A result ≥200 mg/dL plus thirst, polyuria and weight loss confirms diabetes.
