Fructosamine
Diabetes · also called Glycated serum protein
What it measures
Fructosamine measures glucose bound to serum proteins, mainly albumin, reflecting average glucose over 2–3 weeks. It is useful when HbA1c is unreliable or rapid changes in control need checking.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Serum or lithium-heparin plasma
- Tube: Gold top
Reference range
| Group | Range |
|---|---|
| Non-diabetic adult | 200–285 µmol/L |
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Poorly controlled diabetes
- Hypothyroidism
Causes of low values
- Low albumin (nephrotic syndrome, liver disease)
- Hyperthyroidism
- Protein-losing states
Method
Colorimetric nitroblue tetrazolium or enzymatic method
Good to know
Interpret with serum albumin; results are not comparable between methods.
