Fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products (FDP)
Coagulation · also called FDPs, FSP, Fibrin split products
What it measures
Measures fragments released when plasmin breaks down fibrin and fibrinogen. It supports the diagnosis of DIC and other states of increased fibrinolysis.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Citrated plasma or special serum tube with antifibrinolytic
- Tube: Light_blue top
Reference range
| Group | Range |
|---|---|
| Adult | <10 µg/mL |
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Disseminated intravascular coagulation
- Venous thromboembolism
- Thrombolytic therapy
- Primary fibrinolysis
- Liver disease, recent surgery
Method
Latex agglutination (semi-quantitative) or immunoturbidimetry
Good to know
Unlike D-dimer, FDP also rises with breakdown of fibrinogen alone. D-dimer is more specific for fibrin formation.
