D-dimer
Coagulation · also called Fibrin D-dimer, FDP D-dimer
What it measures
Detects a specific breakdown fragment of cross-linked fibrin, showing that clotting and clot breakdown are taking place. Mainly used to rule out deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in low-risk patients.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Citrated plasma (3.2% sodium citrate)
- Tube: Light_blue top
Reference range
| Group | Range |
|---|---|
| Adult (FEU) | <0.50 mg/L FEU |
| Adult (DDU) | <250 ng/mL DDU |
| Age-adjusted cut-off (>50 y) | age × 0.01 mg/L FEU |
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism
- DIC
- Recent surgery or trauma
- Pregnancy
- Infection, cancer, COVID-19
- Advanced age
Method
Latex immunoturbidimetric or ELISA/immunofluorescence assay
Good to know
High negative predictive value but low specificity: a normal result helps exclude VTE, a raised result does not confirm it. Check units (FEU vs DDU) before comparing.
