Anti-double-stranded DNA antibody (anti-dsDNA)
Arthritis & Autoimmune · also called dsDNA antibody
What it measures
Detects antibodies against native DNA, which are highly specific for systemic lupus erythematosus. Levels often track disease activity, particularly lupus nephritis.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Serum
- Tube: Gold top
Reference range
| Group | Range |
|---|---|
| Adult | Negative (ELISA often < 30) IU/mL |
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Active lupus nephritis (rising titre)
- Some drug reactions (anti-TNF therapy)
Method
Crithidia luciliae IFA, ELISA/CLIA, or Farr assay
Good to know
Rising anti-dsDNA with falling C3/C4 suggests an impending lupus flare.
