Fecal calprotectin

What it measures
Measures a neutrophil protein in stool that reflects intestinal inflammation. It helps separate inflammatory bowel disease from irritable bowel syndrome and monitors IBD activity.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Stool
- Tube: Stool top
- Preparation: Avoid NSAIDs for 2 weeks if possible; single random sample.

Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Active Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
- Infectious gastroenteritis
- NSAID enteropathy
- Colorectal cancer, polyps

ELISA, immunoturbidimetry or quantitative rapid test
Good to know
Levels are physiologically higher in infants and young children.
