What it measures
The least common white cells; they release histamine in allergic reactions. A raised count is an important clue to myeloproliferative neoplasms.

Causes of high values
- Chronic myeloid leukemia
- Other myeloproliferative neoplasms
- Hypothyroidism
- Allergic reactions
- Ulcerative colitis
Causes of low values
- Usually not significant
- Acute infection or stress
- Hyperthyroidism

Basophilia is an early sign of CML and of accelerated phase disease; confirm on a blood film.
