Antisperm antibodies
Semen & Infertility · also called ASA, MAR test, Immunobead test
What it measures
Detects antibodies bound to sperm or present in serum or seminal fluid. They can impair motility and binding to the egg, causing immunological infertility.
Specimen and preparation
- Specimen: Fresh semen (direct) or serum
- Tube: Semen top
- Preparation: 2–7 days abstinence.
Reference range
| Group | Range |
|---|---|
| MAR/immunobead | < 50 % motile sperm bound |
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, methods and populations. Always use the range printed on your own lab report.
Causes of high values
- Vasectomy reversal
- Testicular trauma, torsion or surgery
- Genital tract infection or obstruction
Method
Mixed antiglobulin reaction (MAR) or immunobead test
Good to know
